Answers to the questions couples ask most about planning a destination wedding in Rome, Tuscany, Florence, and Lake Como, from the team at Aisle and Co. We're experts, and our job is to guide you along the way!
Planning a wedding in Italy is exciting, and it comes with a lot of questions. Below are the ones we hear most from couples considering a destination wedding in Italy, covering everything from legal paperwork to the best time of year.
Why hire a wedding planner for a wedding in Italy?
An Italy wedding involves vendors, venues, and paperwork in another country, often in another language. A destination wedding planner handles venue sourcing, vendor negotiations, legal requirements, translation, guest logistics, and the day-of timeline, so you aren't managing it all from thousands of miles away. A planner who knows the area also helps you avoid common mistakes, like choosing a venue that isn't a good fit or underestimating travel time between locations.
How far in advance should we start planning an Italy wedding?
We recommend starting 12 to 18 months ahead. The best villas and venues in Tuscany and Lake Como book well in advance. Shorter timelines are sometimes possible, particularly for smaller weddings or off-peak dates, so reach out even if your date is closer.
Choosing Your Location
Which part of Italy is best for a destination wedding?
It depends on the feel you want, and we can help with this from firsthand experience. Rome offers history and grand architecture. Tuscany offers rolling hills, vineyards, and countryside villas. Florence blends Renaissance art with elegant city venues. Lake Como offers dramatic lakeside scenery and historic villas. Many couples also combine a wedding in one place with a honeymoon in another.
What's it like to have a wedding in Rome?
Rome is ideal for couples who want a wedding that feels timeless. Options include historic palazzi, private villas, rooftop terraces with views of the city, and estates in the surrounding Roman countryside. Rome is also easy to reach, since it has a major international airport, which makes it convenient for guests traveling from the US and elsewhere. Because it's a busy city, we pay close attention to logistics like transportation and timing.
What's it like to have a wedding in Tuscany?
Tuscany is one of the most popular regions in the world for destination weddings. Couples choose from countryside villas, vineyards, castles, and farmhouse estates, many of which can host your ceremony, reception, and guest accommodations in one place. The region is known for its food and wine, so the catering is a highlight. Most Tuscany weddings are an hour or more from the nearest major airport, so we plan guest transportation carefully.
What's it like to have a wedding in Florence?
Florence offers an urban alternative to the Tuscan countryside, with historic villas on the hills above the city, elegant palazzi, and gardens. It's also a convenient base for guests, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and sightseeing. Many couples combine Florence with a countryside venue elsewhere in Tuscany for a mix of city and rural settings.
What's it like to have a wedding at Lake Como?
Lake Como is known for historic lakeside villas, terraced gardens, and mountain views. Venues in towns such as Bellagio, Tremezzo, Varenna, and Lenno are especially sought after. Many villas are intimate in size, so Lake Como suits smaller weddings and elopements well, and some venues limit guest counts or music times. Because guests travel by road and boat, we plan transportation with extra care. Lake Como is roughly an hour from Milan and its airports.
What is the best time of year for a wedding in Italy?
Late spring (May and June) and early fall (September and early October) are the most popular times, with comfortable weather and long days. July and August can be very hot, particularly in Rome and Florence, and many Italians vacation in August. Early fall in Tuscany coincides with the harvest, which many couples love. Off-peak dates in spring, late fall, and even winter can offer better availability and value.
Do we have to be legally married in Italy?
No. Couples have three common choices: a legal civil ceremony in Italy, a Catholic ceremony, or a symbolic ceremony in Italy combined with a legal marriage at home. Many international couples choose the symbolic option because it removes much of the paperwork while still giving them the ceremony they want in Italy.
What do we need for a legal civil ceremony in Italy?
Requirements are set by the local town hall (comune) and depend on your nationality, so they vary. In general, couples need valid passports, documentation from their home country confirming they're free to marry, and two witnesses. Some documents may need an apostille and a certified Italian translation, and an interpreter is typically required if you don't speak Italian. Rules and processing times change, so we confirm the current requirements for your chosen location and walk you through each step. Please also check with the relevant authorities or your consulate before you finalize your plans.
How do you handle language barriers and local vendors?
We work with trusted local vendors in each region, including florists, caterers, photographers, musicians, and transportation providers, and we handle communication and contracts on your behalf. That includes translation where needed, so you don't have to negotiate in a second language.
How do you plan guest travel and accommodations?
We help you with room blocks, transportation between the airport, hotels, and the wedding venue, welcome events, and recommendations for guests who want to extend their trip. Getting guests there comfortably is a big part of a successful destination wedding.
Can you plan a wedding in Italy if we live in the US?
Yes, many of our couples live outside Italy! We coordinate across time zones through scheduled calls and a shared planning process, and our team handles on-the-ground details in Italy.
